After graduating from UCT I moved to Johannesburg for my internship placement at Helen Joseph Hospital, where I also completed my community service year.

I spent several more years in Johannesburg doing GP locums, executive wellness medicals and theatre assisting.
I moved back to Cape Town with my husband and son, and with my daughter on the way. Johannesburg was good to me!
I made a decision to dedicate my career to community medicine. My late father was a career public servant at Red Cross Hospital and set an excellent example.

I spent the next 7 years working for the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, initially in clinical work based largely in Gugulethu, but then more and more in HIV and TB treatment and prevention research, and administration.

As much as I enjoyed my work I missed the regular patient contact, so I left to take up a post at the City of Cape Town where I spent most of the next 4 years being the only doctor at Ocean View, and then Masiphumelele, Clinics. The experience gained was invaluable and I really loved what I did, working in very special communities with hard-working and dedicated nurses, pharmacists and support staff. But the constant pressures took their toll, and the time came to move on.
Although I hung up my public service hat with great sadness, I was also excited for the next chapter of my career.
I was immensely fortunate to have found a place for myself at Kendalwood Surgery, amongst knowledgeable and supportive colleagues who helped me launch my career in private practice.
And I was very surprised to find myself still practicing community medicine. This time it's in my own community, where I live and where we have raised our children.
